Active Travel Grant Scheme for Surrey Employers

Boost productivity, cut congestion, and relieve workplace parking pressure by applying for a Smarter Travel to Work grant from Active Surrey. The Smarter Travel to Work grant scheme supports employers fulfil their travel plans and enable more staff to travel to work actively, on foot, by bicycle, and on public transport.

The Smarter Travel to Work grant scheme offers grants of up to £5,000.  Grant awards are exclusive of VAT.

Active Surrey’s Smarter Travel to Work toolkits support employers to create high-quality travel plans in clearly explained steps with templates and tools to help. To be eligible for a grant, you must use the toolkit or followed a similar process. 

Examples of travel plan interventions, for which the grant could be used are:

  • Improvement of pedestrian access within your site
  • Events to promote walking and cycling and public transport use, such as sustainable travel breakfast events, on-site bike maintenance courses, Dr Bike repair sessions.
  • Introduction of a parking scheme to prioritise on-site car parking spaces for those with particular needs, to repurpose car parking spaces, or to introduce traffic restrictions or a car parking levy to support sustainable travel interventions.
  • Shuttle bus promotion / incentives
  • Bus taster tickets
  • Improved cycle parking, drying facilities, shower facilities
  • Lockers
  • Provision of pool bikes
  • Giveaways to encourage sustainable travel choices such as backpacks, re-useable water bottles, bike locks, bike panniers, bike helmets, bike lights.

Terms & Conditions

The employer must have a travel plan in place, which was created or reviewed within the last two years.

A staff travel survey conducted in the last two years which informed the travel plan.

The employer’s site must be in the county of Surrey.

At least one quote per project item must be submitted with the grant application (links to online quotes are acceptable).

Procurement should favour the most sustainable, environmentally friendly options where they realistically exist.

The project delivery must commence within 3 months of the date of payment of the grant, and any facilities funded by the grant must be available for a period of at least 3 years.

Grants will not be awarded retrospectively.

Employers with robust Environmental Society Governance (ESG) / Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies will be favoured.

Match-funded applications are welcomed.

You will need to complete a post-grant questionnaire and provide photographic evidence, receipts and a short case study.

Any relevant permission (i.e. planning consent or landlord permission) must be obtained to install facilities as necessary, and evidence must be provided with the application.

The grant funding cannot be used to pay for facilities/projects that are conditions eg of planning consent for a development.

The grant covers the net price of the measure only. Active Surrey is unable to provide funding for VAT. The VAT cost must be covered by the applicant.
