50+ Physical Activity

Benefits of being active

Taking part in regular physical activity has a range of benefits and is important for all ages. There are also particular health benefits for older people.

Most of us know that taking part in regular physical activity can help to keep us fit and well, but do you know just how much difference this can make to your body?

The benefits of physical activity are varied and include:

  • More energy - exercise makes you feel more energetic
  • Healthy weight - regular exercise helps to stabilise your weight
  • Improved sleep - your body and mind feel as though they've worked out and are ready for rest at night
  • Delayed ageing - keeping active strengthens your muscles, joints and bones as well as helping with mobility and balance
  • Lower blood pressure and improved circulation

A lot of people feel they don't have time to squeeze exercise into a busy schedule, but it can be built into your day-to-day life and doesn't need to take very long, just 3 x 10 minute bursts a day if necessary.  If you're at work all day, try going out for a walk on your lunch break or going for a swim at your local pool.
