HOCKEY FESTIVALS

Surrey's Artificial Turf Pitches (ATPs) resounded to the sounds of ball on stick and crazy goal celebrations in October, as Active Surrey's first 3 Primary School Festivals got underway.

What's a Festival Like?

For an idea of the fun to be had, read the report below about the 2002 festivals.........

The competitions in Guildford (17 Oct), Staines (22 Oct), and Woking GroupWoking (24 Oct) involved 20 Surrey Primary Schools and nearly 300 Year 6 boys & girls and was organised by Peter Berman, Active Surrey's Hockey Activator, in conjunction with the schools and local hockey clubs.

Active Surrey coaches had been visiting the schools in the run-up to the event, to give coaching and advice, and were again on hand  to officiate the tournaments.  The standard of play topped all expectations, with many players catching their attention, especially those children who were voted their festival's Most Guildford FestivalValuable Players.

In Guildford, the honours fell to Cerys potter (Queen Eleanor's) & Michael Gillard (St Josephs); in Staines, the MVP's were Kirsty Hull (Ashford C of E) and Jake Flatman (Clarendon); and in Woking, Abigail Perrott (St Bede's) & Thomas Lintott (Westfield) were the winners.  Each MVP received a fantastic Mercian hockey stick as a reward!!

The Woking children were especially lucky as they received a visit from current England & Great Britain Goalkeeper Simon Mason!!  He was on hand to dish out prizes and pose for pictures with the next generation of GB goalies! (see below)

Peter said, "The days were a great success with the young people really enjoying themselves and scoring goals aplenty!  Hopefully the competitions will be the start of more hockey activity in the county.  The local Borough Sports Development Officers and the Hockey Clubs will now be identifying further ways to work with the Schools to develop this event into regular coaching sessions and competition for these keen youngsters".
