SPORTING YOUNGSTERS RACE TO THE P&G SURREY YOUTH GAMES!

2,300 competitors from all over Surrey gathered together in Guildford and Woking last weekend (21 & 22 June), alongside Great Britain Sporting Champions Jo Sarjant (basketball) and Cathy Gilliat-Smith (hockey), to take part in the county's largest youth sporting festival, the P&G Surrey Youth Games 2008.

Young people aged from 7 to 15 years old competed for medals and trophies across 14 different sports, representing the 11 districts and boroughs in which they live or go to school.  High quality local facilities were used for the 12th staging of the annual multi-sports event.  Football, hockey, squash, netball and High-5 netball (a 5-a-side version of the game for primary age children), tennis and rugby competitions were held on the magnificent courts and pitches at the University of Surrey's Varsity Centre; Futsal (a version of indoor football), badminton and fencing were staged at Woking Leisure Centre and Park with, for the first time this year, Swimming at Woking Pool in the Park; athletics, basketball, boccia and judo were held at the award-winning Guildford Spectrum.

Fencing, futsal, swimming and High-5 netball were demonstration sports at this year's Games but teams taking part in all other events scored points depending on their final positions. The annual Overall Borough Trophy was awarded to the Borough with the highest points total (each boroughs score calculated using its highest score from eight different sports plus one disability event) and this year Spelthorne achieved this honour.

Congratulations to Spelthorne (87 points) who won the Overall Borough Trophy and to Woking (81 points) and Elmbridge (76 points) who finished in second and third place respectively. These positions reflect the consistency of their teams performances across the range of sports.

The SCPFA Fair Play Award went to Mole Valley.

The P&G Surrey Youth Games have continued to grow and develop since 1997 with long-standing support from Sport England and continued support of Procter & Gamble.

One of the main aims of the Games is to encourage young people to develop their sporting skills and promote physical activity as well as fair play in sport.  Over 3,500 young people have attended local coaching sessions over the past two months in preparation for the Games and, for many of the players selected, the event is their first experience of countywide competition. It is hoped that this experience will encourage all those involved to continue playing at one of the many quality local sports clubs.

As Surrey's largest multi-sport event, the Games provide a showcase for Surreys future young sporting champions. As always the standard of play was extremely high and Great Britain Basketball player Jo Sarjant and Great Britain hockey player Cathy Gilliant-Smith, who attended the event along with many other local dignitaries, may well have seen a 2012 Olympian or Paralympian taking part!

The Games also encourages people to continue their involvement in sport through coaching and officiating.  The effort and commitment of over 300 volunteers, including 100 enthusiastic young volunteers from Surreys Young Coaches & Officials (SYCO) programme, played a large part in the overall success of this years Games.

SPORTING CHAMPIONS BACK THE GAMES

Young people attending this years P&G Surrey Youth Games, had the opportunity to meet two Sporting Champions: Great Britain basketball player Jo Sarjant and Great Britain hockey player Cathy Gilliant-Smith. Sport England's Sporting Champion scheme brings world-class athletes face-to-face with young people to inspire and motivate them to participate in sport.

At the age of about 14 years Jo was playing county basketball.  From there she was picked for the England U15 Basketball squad and attended a tournament in France. She then played for the U16, U18 and at 17 years old, was selected for the England National Senior squad and achieved her first cap. In September 2006, a Great Britain squad was selected to begin the journey towards the Olympic Games 2012. Jo was selected for this and played against Luxemburg, Bosnia, Ireland and Portugal.

Cathy played hockey in county and regional age groups, and for Sevenoaks Hockey Club before going to Loughborough University where she began playing National League.
In 2000 she made her England U21 debut and in 2003 progressed to the Senior side where to date, she has 54 caps and has recently made her Great Britain debut. Career highlights so far include a bronze medal at the 2005 Europeans, bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and gold at the World Cup Qualifying tournament.

We are very grateful to Sporting Champions for organising such fantastic role models to visit this year's Surrey Youth Games.
