HOW TO
BECOME A COACH
Please click
here to view a video by sports coach
UK about becoming a coach.
Coaching can be extremely rewarding and
the information below will provide you with ideas on how to take
your first steps towards becoming a coach.
STEP 1:
OBSERVATION
Introduce yourself to your local sports
clubs and ask if you can observe a lead coach in action. Talk
to them about the coaching set up at the club and think about what
type of participant you would like to coach.
Ideally you should observe at least a Level 2 qualified
coach.
STEP 2a: STEP INTO
SPORT FOR 14 - 19 YEAR OLDS
The Step into Sport programme
is a strand of the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People, which is
implemented through the School Sport
Partnerships. This is available to all 14-19
year old students and offered to students through their School
Sport Partnership. Please talk to your PE department about
the Step into Sport programme.

STEP 2b: COACHABILITY FOR
DEAF & DISABALED
PEOPLE
Coachability is a Sport Leadership
Programme for deaf or disabled people who are aged 19 or over and
are unemployed. It is aimed at people who have
an interest in sport and sport volunteering and would like to
become a community sports leader, volunteer or coach.
STEP
2c: SPORT LEADERS UK -
(available to
everyone over 9 yrs old
to adult)
Sports Leaders UK provides
nationally recognised leadership qualifications and awards that
help people develop essential life skills such as organisation,
motivation, communication and working with others.
Candidates do not need to be a sports stars but do need an
interest in their chosen activity, a positive attitude and a
willingness to volunteer.
This is a great way to
understand and develop some of the skills needed to be a coach
and potentially have the opportunity to work alongside qualified
coaches.

CRIMINAL RECORD BUREAU

COACH LIABILITY INSURANCE:
As a qualified Level 1 coach, you will
be eligible to buy Coach Liability Insurance.
This insurance works in the same way as any other insurance, and
should cover you just encase something occurs during a
session.
Many NGBs will offer insurance as part
of achieving a Coaching
Certificate/Qualification. Check with
your relevant NGB for details.
sport coach UK will also cover you for
any sport you are qualified in. If you coach more than one
sport, this could work out cheaper than buying individual
NGB insurance.
