The Disability Sports award is for
an individual who has:
- made a significant impact on disability sport and been an inspiration to others;
- devoted continuous time and resources to the development of disability sport;
- overcome barriers to excel in sport;
- been a role model/mentor for other disabled people.
The shortlisted nominees

Bethany Brookes -
WINNER
Reigate
Lawn Tennis Club
At the age of just 15 Bethany
reached the final of this years ladies singles in the National Deaf
Tennis Championships. She has also been selected to represent Great
Britain and will be joining the National Deaf Tennis Squad later
this year. This selection will give Bethany the
opportunity to represent Great Britain in the 2011 Deaf Davis Cup,
the 2012 European Championships and the 2013 Deaflympics in
Athens. In addition to playing in national
tournaments, Bethany regularly represents her school and is an
active member of Reigate Lawn Tennis Club.
Bethany also appeared on the BBC See Hear programme encouraging
others to get involved in deaf sports. Her
attitude and achievements make her an outstanding role
model.
Alex
Hovden
Queen
Mary Sailing Club
Alex suffers from severe athetoid
cerebral palsy which means he only has the use of one arm, has
difficulty with communication and is a permanent wheelchair
user. Despite only starting to sail in 2005,
Alex finished 5th in last years Sailability Multiclass
Championships and 18th at the World Challenger
Championships. This success meant that Alex was
signed up as a full member of the Challenger Transition Squad with
possible selection to the 2012 Paralympic Squad. In 2008 Alex beat
able-bodied sailors to win the Thames Valley Young Sailor of the
Year before finishing runner up for the National
title.
Liam
Duhig
Westerleigh Judokwai
Club
Liam suffers from dyspraxia,
resulting in both verbal and motor learning
difficulties. At 16 he took up judo and
has gone on to compete in various special needs competitions,
including the European Championships in Sweden, where he won
silver, and the Great British Summer Games, at which he won silver
and gold. He recently visited Walton Leigh
Special School to inspire budding athletes to join the local
inclusive sports club, showing off the bronze medal he won in
Chinas 2007 Special Olympics which also won him the 2008 Surrey
Disability Sports Award. He is nominated again
this year for his achievement in winning the silver medal at the
south east special needs judo finals.
