COMPETITION MANAGERS IN SURREY
Competition Managers have been
employed to work within the School Sport Partnerships and
Community Sport networks, to ensure that varied competitive
sporting opportunities are being offered within school environments
and that young people are being trained and encouraged to take
part. Our role is not to replace the excellent voluntary work
currently in place, but to support and co-ordinate competitive
sport more effectively, to ensure as many schools and pupils can
access a wide range of activities, at a variety of levels from
school to county, regional and national
standard.
Working with National
Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs), School Sport Associations
(SSAs) and the local community network of clubs,
coaches, referees and officials, the aim is to provide more
structure and cohesion to competitive sport for young
people.
Whilst the focus is
mainly on inter school competition for 5-16yrs, there are
additional links and cross overs that will be made with other areas
of the PESSYP (such as leadership and volunteering, club
development and school club links), which contribute to the shared,
overall target for all schools - the 5 hour offer.
County Target
(2008/09)
A 5% increase in the number of 'new
young people' taking part in high quality (appropriate,
integrated and inclusive) inter school competition.
What is a new young
person?
A new young
person (NYP) is an individual that did not compete in inter school
competition during the last academic year only, based on the data
submitted for the 2007/08 PESSCL survey. E.g. If a young person
competed in an inter school competition in 2006/07, but suffered an
injury and did not compete in 2007/08, they are classed as a new
young person for this academic year - 2008/09. Young people should
only be counted once, not for every event that they participate in.
All Yr 1 pupils are classed as NYP this academic year but Year 7s
are only new if they did not compete in an inter school event in
Year 6.
= 5% increase per School Sports
Partnership (SSP)
= 6200 new young people in Surrey (who
did not compete in 2007/08)
= approximately 1000 per
SSP
We need to ensure that 39% (48,138) of
young people who competed last year, continue to experience inter
school competition as well.
All of the targets centred on
competition, interlink with many other PESSYP strands such as
school-club links, leadership and volunteering and Continued
Professional Development. Our role is also to streamline the
current competition formats and structures in line with the NGBs
National Competition Frameworks and to ensure clear pathways exist
for all young people.
