P&G SURREY YOUTH
GAMES
19 & 20 JUNE
2010
The
2010 P&G Surrey Youth Games takes place this weekend, 19 and 20
June, in Guildford.
WHAT IS IT?
All eleven Districts and
Boroughs in Surrey enter teams into the thirteen different sporting
events. There are events for all ages, including events for
young people with disabilities. To find out more details
about a particular sport, please click on the links on the right
hand panel.
HOW TO TAKE PART
Anyone can take part by
attending coaching and training sessions, which are usually free,
in their borough. These take place from April to June
each year. All competitors must either live or go to school
in a borough in order to be eligible to compete for that borough
and must be below county standard in their chosen
sport.
AIMS OF THE GAMES
The aim of the Games is to
develop sport in Surrey. Via the Games, the following
outcomes are achieved:
-
More young people take part in competitive sport, and continue to take part in sport after the Games: around 2,500 youngsters are involved at the Finals weekend and 15% of non-club members join local clubs post-Games.
-
More sports clubs become accredited by their National Governing Body, thereby improving the quality of sports clubs in Surrey: of all the clubs supporting trials and squads, 88% have Clubmark with the rest working towards accreditation.
-
More people become qualified in sports coaching and officiating: 59% of head coaches are level 2 qualified and, thanks to Gatwick Airport, all volunteers can claim training bursaries.
-
New junior sports clubs or sections are created: many of the SYG borough squads will form the basis of new sections at local clubs next season and 20% of last year's new volunteers went on to help at local clubs.
