COACHING
LEVEL 1
Assistant Coach (£60) - minimum
age 16 years
Who should
attend?
Parents/helpers over 16 years looking to
start coaching - whether in a volunteer capacity or
professional.
This course is an introduction to
coaching skills, with a major emphasis on the 'how to' skills
rather than the 'what' skills. It is a one day
workshop (normally 9am
until 5pm) covering
coaching skills, some fundamental run, jump and throw techniques
and a very basic introduction into the energy
systems.
Each participant will receive a Level 1
Manual provided on the day of the course.
Within eight weeks of the course,
providing a signed coach licence application form and passport
photo have been submitted and the CRB
check has been completed, a coach pass and licence will be
produced and sent to the coach. The coach is then qualified
and insured to coach under the supervision of a coach qualified at
Level 2 or higher.

LEVEL 2
Coaching Course (£140) - minimum
age 18 years
Who should
attend?
Level 1 coaches aged 18 years and over,
working within a club or with club based athletes.
The Level 2 course will enable coaches
to specialise in a chosen group of events (Endurance,
Sprints/Hurdles, Jumps, Throws). It consists of a two
day generic core workshop, some practice with other club based
licensed coaches and an event module day with
assessment.
This course follows on from the Level 1
course. The 'core' part of the award is taken by coaches of
all disciplines and goes into greater depth on topics such as
learning styles, how to use questioning and give feedback in your
coaching, how to use demonstrations appropriately, how to most
effectively observe and analyse athletes you are coaching. At
the same time topics such as planning a session, anatomy and
physiology, strength training, development of power, teaching
technique are all covered.
Following on from the core, coaches go
through a period of 'supported practice' during which they will
work with a more experienced coach. Some of these sessions
will be logged and coaches are encouraged to reflect on what they
have learnt.
The final part of the award is an 'event
specific' day, when a coach will decide which event group they
would like to specialise in (Endurance, Sprints, Jumps and
Throws). This is a half-day session where coaches can expect
to learn about the specific techniques involved in the events and
how to coach them. During the final half-day session the
coaches are assessed while they deliver a short coaching session
that they have prepared previously.
Once all of the parts have been
completed to a satisfactory level the coach will be upgraded to a
Level 2 coach and will receive a new pass and licence to reflect
this within approximately eight weeks.
The core workshop takes place over two
days (usually over one weekend).
The event specific day/assessment day is
one full day (it usually takes place approximately eight weeks
after the core weekend has been completed).
The cost for the complete Level
2 course (Core and Event Module of choice plus
Assessment) is £140. It will be an
extra £30 per extra Event Module/Assessment.
