TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Sports volunteers perform a
wide variety of tasks for their clubs and organisations - so it's
hardly surprising there are a lot of different training programmes
available to them!
The type of training on
offer depends on the role of the volunteer:
Sports
leaders are qualified and experienced in leading physically active,
general sports activities. Unlike coaches they do not necessarily
have any particular technical expertise in any one formally
recognised sport. They are, however, qualified and experienced in
providing a safe, motivating and physically active session for a
wide range of participants and across a wide range of physical
activities.
Sports Leaders

- Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership

Leadership

Sports Leaders UK is a
charity which has developed general sports leadership
courses, including a Level 1 Award for dance. They
focus on developing the organisational abilities, self-confidence
and communication skills of participants so that they can run safe,
effective and meaningful physical activities.
Many Sports Leaders UK
Awards (especially the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership and the
Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership, which are commonly
known as the JSLA and CSLA) are delivered in schools and FE
Colleges young participants may therefore be able to attend a
course there.
However,
outside of school/college it may be necessary to find out about how
people can be trained as tutors for the awards - please contact
Sports Leaders UK for any further details:

Football Union Community Leaders Award
- Badminton
Junior Helper Award
etc
NGBs (e.g.
the Football Association, England Netball) run sports leadership
courses which relate to their particular sport. Targeted at young
people, they mark an introduction to coaching and can
operate as stand-alone courses or as additions to ("bolt-ons")
to the Sports Leaders UK awards. However, unlike the Sports Leaders
UK awards they are not formal qualifications!
A full list of the NGB sports leadership awards can be downloaded here.
We run the Surrey Young Coaches & Officials programme (SYCO), an annual programme of NGB leadership awards in the community - please click here for more information.
Sports coaches are qualified with one or more
sports coaching awards and are experienced in coaching
sports-specific activities.

etc
Sports National Governing Bodies (NGBs)
are keen that anyone coaching or officiating a sport should
do so in line with their guidelines. Therefore many offer
coaching awards, which cover the latest technical aspects specific
to coaching particular sports.
Many NGBs have linked their awards to
the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC). This standardises awards across
sports along the following levels:
·
Level 1 entry level (assistant coach)
·
Level 2 club coach
·
Level 3 head/senior coach
·
Level 4 national/regional coach
·
Level 5 international coach
Generally, only the qualifications from
Level 2 to 5 allow an individual to lead sports coaching sessions
without direct supervision.

The Sport England website has links to all the different NGB websites.
Sports officials take responsibility for
the refereeing or umpiring of games and sporting activities. They
will be required to demonstrate a sound knowledge of sports rules,
self-confidence, safety and good communication.
National Governing Bodies of
Sport Officiating Awards
- Amateur Swimming Association
Timekeeper
- Boccia Young Officials
Award
- England Basketball Level 2 Referees

- England Volleyball Grade 4 Referee

etc
Whilst some National Governing Bodies of
Sport (NGBs) run introductory courses to officiating as part of
their sports leadership programmes (see above), they organise
officiating qualifications on a similar basis to their coaching
qualifications.
