New to volunteering in sport?
If you are you may not know where to go to find those clubs needing
your help!
There are many ways to solve
this problem, from working through organisations set up to help you
into volunteering to finding out what's out there
yourself.
With the London Olympic Games
only four years away, sports event and competition volunteering
enjoys a higher profile than it ever has before! Events are a great
way for people to get a flavour of what sports volunteering is all
about, and for current volunteers to do something different from
their usual involvement. They can also help to
complete hours for volunteering schemes in a variety of
different environments.
When you start
volunteering for a club, you should be given certain information:
on the club itself, on what you will be doing for the club and how
your volunteering will be supported and
recognised.
As a volunteer, you should also expect certain
policies and procedures to be in place. Many clubs may have
structures in place which could lend themselves to a better
volunteering environment (from the basics of having adequate
liability insurance to having Volunteer Coordinators in post),
but this does not necessarily mean that you will be well
supported!
A simple Volunteering Checklist is
available for you to download - use it as a reminder of
what your expectations should be as a volunteer at any club, and to
see if the club your currently involved with is supporting
you!

There are schemes and programmes in
place which can recognise the time you put into helping school and
community sport, and give you access to subsidised or free
training!
