VOLUNTEERING

Volunteers are the lifeblood of sport in local communities
(Sport England, 2002)

It is well known that sport relies heavily on the invaluable work of volunteers to keep going. Active Surrey fully recognises this and aims to support clubs and organisations across Surrey to help recruit and retain volunteers. These pages are designed to give you up-to-date information about volunteering, whether you're a person who would like to volunteer or a sports organisation who would like help in recruiting, retaining and rewarding volunteers.

Regardless of whether you are new to volunteering in sport, or someone who spent years coaching or administrating your local team, it's good to understand what support there is for you!

There are lots of organisations geared to placing new volunteers in organisations like sports clubs, and club/organisations themselves should have procedures and people in place to make sure you enjoy your volunteering. In addition, there are lots of award schemes and training opportunities which you can access as a volunteer! More>>

The vast majority of sports clubs rely on volunteers to run from day to day. The volunteers currently in clubs need support to make sure that they continue to volunteer and that they enjoy giving their time. New volunteers, on the other hand, are desirable as they can bring fresh enthusiasm, replace people who stop volunteering and allow the club to be flexible in what it can do - with more people to help, more can be done!

To help your club, there are organisations geared to finding new volunteers and to give advice on volunteering issues, ways of working to maximise the retention, recruitment and retention of volunteers, and workshops to train volunteers in non-coaching roles. More>>

Sport in this country simply cannot exist without the support of people who spend time, unpaid, helping with the running of activities, training and competitions across the country. To recognise the importance of their volunteering and to celebrate their achievements, awards are run locally, regionally and nationally. Sports volunteers could win awards wholly based on volunteering or awards as part of a larger sports ceremony. So if you know of anyone whose contribution to sport needs noticing, nominate them!
