INTRODUCTION
Sport Unlimited is a successful
national programme funded by Sport England and aimed at
getting more children and young people to take part in sport
outside school time.
In Surrey, there is a total of £160,000
available for Year 3 of Sport Unlimited. After Phase
1 for applications delivering in Year 3 (1st April 2010 to 31 March 2011) Active
Surrey has about £50,000 remaining to allocate to projects
running between Sept 2010 - March 2011. Funding is awarded
to non-profit making organisations including further
education/higher education establishments, schools, youth groups,
community sports clubs, voluntary organisations, local
authorities, sports governing bodies, etc.
Sport Unlimited funding is targeted at
"semi-sporty" 5-19 year olds living in Surrey's 11
boroughs and districts to engage them in an
extra 1-2 hours a week (minimum 10 weeks) of high quality sport and
physical activity.
In Year 2 (April
2009-March 2010), grants were awarded to 75% of applicants and
ranged from £500 to £5,000. As a result of receiving their grant, organisations
were able to offer new activities free of charge or at very low
cost to local children and young people. The diverse range of
successful Sport Unlimited programmes included kayaking, street
dance, squash, cricket and horse riding.
