BEST
PRACTICE GUIDELINES FOR THE EMPLOYMENT & DEPLOYMENT OF COACHES
IN SURREY.
Understanding The
Need to Recruit the Right Coach in the Right
way
Historically, coach employers have
recruited coaches on an ad-hoc basis and not necessarily
established any type of recruitment process.
Therefore some coaches delivering in Surrey schools, clubs and
leisure facilities may not necessarily have the right
qualifications, let alone the appropriate Criminal Record and other
checks prior to commencing employment.
The formal methods behind recruitment
and the checks that managers and coaches undertake also vary quite
significantly depending on the employer. Whilst
it is appreciated that individual employers may have to adhere to
internal guidelines, the following will provide a recommended
baseline for all coach employers to refer to.
With its inception in April 2000, Active
Sports brought with it a number of clear frameworks within which
nine sports had to operate. County Sports
Partnerships, at the time, had to assess the best way in which to
deliver these 9 sports, which led to the recruitment of a number of
coaches to service the individual sports
objectives. The Active Sports programme brought
to light the need to have the right coach at the right time
delivering to the right age group and these coaches were formally
recruited, inducted, and prescribed with a number of Continuous
Professional Development opportunities that they were required to
access.
The Community Sports Coach Scheme, first
piloted in 2004, further enhanced the ethos of quality standards
for the recruitment, employment, management and development of
coaches. It also looked to ensure managed,
quality, continuous professional development and supported further
the step change in developing a career structure for
coaching.
This document
aims to provide some consistency for coach employers around
recruiting, checking, retaining and rewarding coaches with best
practice examples so you can make sure that the sessions your
coaches are delivering are safe, quality and more importantly fun
for all participants!
