CONFERENCE - 7 JUNE 2007

Surrey Shapes Its Sporting Future

Surreys sporting partners had the chance to have their say at the countys 3rd bi-annual sports conference which took place recently.

Over 100 delegates from 62 different organisations came together for the Shaping the Future event held at Silvermere Golf Club, Cobham, on 7 June organised by the Active Surrey Sports Partnership (ASSP).  Keynote speeches by the Youth Sports Trust (YST), SportsAid and Sport England were followed by round table discussions on local sport, health and activity priorities.

Alison Oliver, YSTs Sport Director, explained to delegates about the role that Surrey organisations can play in supporting the YSTs 2010 Ambition to enhance the take up of exercise by school children.  She also talked about the more defined role that YST, Sport England and UK Sport have taken in relation to the sporting relay race: with YST focusing on PE & school sport, Sport England working on raising adult participation with UK Sport concentrating their efforts on elite performers.  This theme was extended by Hannah Bladen from Sport England South East who informed the audience that the majority of lottery funding would now be directed to adult interventions.

Delegates watched a film about the University of Surreys proposed new Sports Centre and Sports Director Barry Hitchcock was on hand to answer questions about the impressive facility, due for completion in 2009/10.  And Tim Lawler, Chief Executive of SportsAid talked about all the emerging athletes that had been supported in reaching their potential over the last 30 years and asked the audience to think about how they could get involved in raising funds, including recycling print cartridges for SportsAid!

The enthusiastic audience also explored the future of sport and physical activity in Surrey by examining issues of local, regional and national importance at round table workshops where they discussed priorities for the coming year on the Partnerships areas of interest, the 12 Better Frameworks.

Sarah White, ASSP Partnership Manager, commented, We were delighted to secure such important and knowledgeable keynote speakers.  As a Partnership we are committed to making Surrey a more active and successful sporting county and we hope that everyone attending todays conference has been inspired to help achieve this vision.  Sport in Surrey is progressing well and the Active Surrey Sports Partnership is committed to using this work as building blocks towards achieving an even brighter future for sport in the county.

Attendees commented that the day was highly informative and they benefited greatly from such a valuable networking opportunity.
