CONFERENCE - 26 January 2006

Making Surrey A More Active & Successful Sporting County

The Active Surrey Sports Partnership celebrated its official launch on Thursday 26 January 2006 after receiving a cheque from the lottery totalling £786,552 to help support the development of sport & physical activity in the county until 2009.

Over 90 partners from Governing Bodies of Sport, Surrey's Local Authorities, Local Sports Clubs and Disability Groups, Sport England, Surrey County Playing Fields Association, School Sports Partnerships, Primary Care Trusts, national coaching & sports leadership agencies and voluntary sector organisations showed their support for "Making Surrey a more active and successful sporting county".

The event explored the Partnership's vision for the future of sport and physical activity in Surrey, examined issues of local, regional and national importance and highlighted successes in the county, which clearly demonstrate the true value of sport.

Sarah White, Partnership Manager, commented, "Sport in Surrey has progressed greatly over the past few years and the Active Surrey Sports Partnership is committed to using this work as building blocks towards achieving an even brighter future for sport in the county."  Click here to view a summary of achievements

Partnership Chair, Paul Clark, added, "The establishment of the County Sports Partnership network has been central to the development of a modern sporting infrastructure. We have worked hard to build capacity to deliver the target of a 1% increase in participation year on year, and we are delighted that so many of our Partners were able to attend our launch." Partnership working was a central theme for the day and attendees grappled with a group challenge, helping to reinforce the importance of good communication, teamwork and effective planning.

These principles were then taken forward into organised workshops in which groups worked together to evolve plans for the development of Sport in Surrey, including Better Activity, Better Clubs, Better Coaching & Leadership, Better Volunteering, Better Sport in Education, Better Health, Better Competition and Better Facilities. Sport England's South East Regional Director, Sean Holt, said: "
The launch of the Active Surrey Sports Partnership is a significant event for everyone involved in developing sport and physical activity in the county and I must congratulate all those concerned."

Attendees commented that the day was highly informative and generated a great deal of enthusiasm and passion amongst all those involved.

One of the attendees summed up by saying, "My highlight from the day was hearing how well organised and forward thinking Active Surrey Sports Partnership is."
