RUGBY LEAGUE ACTIVITY

Rugby League is a fast growing sport in Surrey thanks to the development work of the Rugby Football League and the local professional team, Harlequins RL.  A comprehensive local programme of school to club to professional opportunities is now in place in the county.  Click on a heading below for more information:

PROFESSIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE
Harlequins Rugby League (RL) is one of the twelve clubs in Super League, the premier competition for rugby league in Europe.  They also run a reserve grade squad, an Under 18s Academy and a full elite scholarship programme from Under 12 to Under 16.

Harlequins Rugby League and Active Surrey work in partnership in North Surrey to deliver rugby league in schools and provide effective links to local clubs in the area.

To find out more about Harlequins Rugby League and their community rugby league programme go to www.quins.co.uk

SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE
Using Active Surrey CSCS funding, Harlequins RL's Community Rugby Coaches deliver quality school curriculum and after school club programmes to both primary and secondary schools across North Surrey.  There are various programmes supporting rugby league development:

Harlequins RL Secondary Link Programme (September to March)
Harlequins RL Community Rugby Coaches work directly with Surrey secondary schools to build a coaching programme in curricular and extra-curricular time to suit the needs of the schools.

Carnegie National Champion Schools Competition
We aim to support schools in preparing their teams to enter the Carnegie Champion Schools Competition.  London and the South is now the third biggest region nationwide in terms of entries into the competition with over 50 schools participating and almost 150 teams taking part in the boys competition alone!

Harlequins RL Schools Leagues
In response to the growing popularity of rugby league, the community team now runs two schools leagues to cater for the demand for regular schools fixtures across South-West London & Surrey.  The leagues are in their second year and now involve 10 schools playing regular fortnightly fixtures at Year 7/8 and Year 9/10.

Girls Rugby League
The demand for girls rugby league is growing and we are finding more and more schools requesting contact rugby league coaching for their girls.

WorkPlace Systems Primary Link Programme (February July)
The Harlequins RL primary school coaching programme is comprised of a more structured schools delivery but is centered on the provision of free curriculum coaching offered to primary schools in North Surrey.

Harlequins RL community coaches deliver a 5 week block of coaching followed up with a festival with the aim of increasing participation and awareness of the sport and providing a pathway to one of the local mini rugby league teams in the area.

All of the children who participated in the WorkPlace Systems Primary Link Programme are subsequently invited along to a Harlequins RL match to see their heroes in action.

If you are interested in either of the Primary or Secondary School Coaching Programmes, please contact Chris Baxter (chrisb@quins.co.uk) to find out how your school could get involved in rugby league.

CLUB RUGBY LEAGUE
There is currently one club in North Surrey to cater for interested rugby league players.

Elmbridge RLFC run teams at all age groups from Under 9 through to open age and take part in the Rugby League Conference Premier South at open age level and in the London Junior League and Mini Leagues a the junior age groups.
